✈️ What Is Flight Compensation?
Flight compensation is the monetary payment airlines are obliged to make to passengers when a scheduled flight:
- Is delayed by more than 3 hours,
- Is completely cancelled,
- You are denied boarding due to overbooking,
- You miss a connecting flight because of a long delay,
- Is changed at the last minute,
In such cases, airlines may be required to pay compensation. These payments usually range from €300 to €600.
🧑⚖️ When Do You Have a Right to Compensation?
You may have a right to compensation in situations such as:
✔ Delay of 3 hours or more
The aircraft arrives at its final destination more than 3 hours late.
✔ Flight cancellation
The airline cancels the flight completely.
✔ Missing a connecting flight due to long delay
A long delay on the first leg causes you to miss your onward connection.
✔ Denied boarding due to overbooking
You are not allowed to board because the flight is overbooked.
✔ Last-minute schedule change
Your flight is significantly changed at short notice.
🌍 Who Can Claim Compensation?
Under general European rules (such as EU Regulation 261/2004):
- All flights departing from an EU country,
- Flights arriving in the EU operated by an EU-based airline,
may be covered.
For flights departing from Türkiye, some airlines apply similar rules.
In addition, in certain situations airlines may be liable to compensate passengers under the international Montreal Convention.
In short:
If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, you very likely have rights to claim compensation.
🧾 How Much Compensation Can You Get? (General Range)
Compensation typically depends on flight distance:
- Flights up to 1,500 km → about €250
- Flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km → about €400
- Flights over 3,500 km → about €600
So, Istanbul – Europe routes are usually in the €250–€400 range.
Flights to destinations like Dubai, Riyadh, or Doha in the Middle East are often in the €400–€600 range.
